Blackcap | Blue Tit | Bullfinch | Chaffinch | Chough Blackcap This
is a bird that I had never seen until December 2005. It is quite a small
bird, about the size of a blue tit, but is fairly easy to identify because of
the distinctive marking on the male. The female has a brown cap. I
saw the female in the garden first, but so far she has been far more difficult
to photograph. I have not seen them at all since the winter months.
Blue Tit One of the more common visitors to the garden feeders, sometimes alone, but frequently in twos or threes, they are daily visitors throughout the whole year. Updated May 2008. The pictures below were taken in 2003. Bullfinch Bullfinches were far less common in the garden at first, and generally stayed on the ground feeding on seed dropped from the feeders. More recently, they seem much more at ease with the feeders, and it was very pleasing to see for the first time during spring 2005 a male and female pair regularly visiting the feeder together. Since then, bullfinches have been regular visitors to the feeders, but only ever singly or in a male and female pair. Chaffinch Chaffinches were almost completely absent
from the garden until 2005. In spring of that year, a female
chaffinch seemed to find her way to the feeders and since then they have
gradually become more regular visitors. The female is the brown bird in these pictures. The
male has the more traditional red colour. Chough The chough is a member of the crow family, black feathers with a distinctive narrow red bill. In Britain it is mainly found in west coast areas. This chough was pictured in August 2008 at South Stack, Anglesey. |
