West Virginia, USA
May 2010

In May 2010, I travelled to West Virginia in eastern USA, my first trip to the US.  This page records some images in the resort where I stayed in Greenbrier County, close to the border with Virginia.  Whilst the purpose of the visit was for business, there were also opportunities to enjoy the grounds and facilities and for a white water rafting trip.

For privacy, I have avoided publishing photos that show people who are easily identifiable.  If you were one of our party and you would like me to send any photos that I might have taken of you, please get in touch.

The Greenbrier Resort

The Greenbrier is an old stately home set in beautiful parkland and countryside in the small town of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.  Originally established in 1778, it has been significantly extended and is now a hotel and resort complex offering a wide range of activities.  There are trails suitable for walking, jogging and mountain biking, and a variety of sports and leisure facilities.  The resort is famed for its golf and its three courses continue to host major events.  It also houses a former cold war bunker which was built under a new extension to the hotel about 1960.  It remained secret and ready to house the American Congress until its existence was leaked by a journalist in the 1990s.  Nowadays the hotel offers tours through parts of it, although photography is not allowed.

Here are just a few of the photographs that I took of the hotel and the grounds.  The entrance shown in these photos is the North Entrance.  The Main Entrance is even larger, but was closed for the construction of a new entertainment complex.  The views of the golf courses are from the club house.

The Valley View Trail

This is the shortest of all of the trails.  It is flat and avoids the hills at the far side of the golf course, winding its way across the river several times.  It is ideal for a walk or a short run - unfortunately I didn't take my running kit with me, but it would have been great to do before breakfast each day.

The New River

The New River in West Virginia is renowned for its white water rafting.  It is set in a beautiful wooded valley and there are several rafting courses suitable for different age groups.  Some of the rapids further down offer championship standard courses.  Our rafting  trip was in the Lower New River, starting near Oak Hill and finishing almost underneath the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville.  The photos below were all taken in the calmer sections.
